Hair today, gone tomorrow
Most of us take the process of hair growth for granted. It is such a microscopic and imperceptible occurrence that we tend to go months before we think of a hair cut. The fact is that hair forms in a small pouch-like structure below the skin called a hair follicle. What we see and brush as hair is actually the hair shaft, which is the keratinized, hardened tissue that grows from this follicle. An interesting and rather amusing fact is that humans as a species have more hair follicles (per square inch of skin) than chimpanzees and gorillas!
The thicker, fully pigmented hair most people consider "real hair" is found on the scalp, eyebrows, legs, backs, underarms, and genital areas. Everyone's hair grows differently, depending on age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and other factors.
All hair goes through three distinct growth phases:
The first is the active growth phase or anagen phase, lasting several years. At any given time, 85% of our body hair is in this first phase where our hair has an abundance of melanin.
The second phase is called the regressive phase or catagen phase, lasting on average only two weeks, during which the hair stops growing but is not shed. Only 3 - 4% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time.
Lastly comes the resting phase or telogen phase, lasting 5 - 6 weeks, after which the hair falls out of the follicle and a new hair begins to form. 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any one time. Unfortunately, as we age, it is common for a natural process of hair loss to begin…
The natural way
There is a lot that can be done to help promote hair strength and vitality in the comfort of your own home. Scientists have found a link between smoking and hair loss - another reason to quit! Always comb through wet hair gently with a comb and not a brush.
To work through hair knots, start at the outer tip and gently work the knot out towards the top. Towel-drying excess water off before combing will also help to put less pressure on the hair shaft. Avoid harsh hair chemicals or heat from hair dryers or heated rollers.
For women, who prefer to sleep with their hair tied up, fabric covered elastics should be used, as plain elastic hair bands can lead to hair breakage and put added structural stress on the hair follicle. Always tie hair up loosely, as a tight style can lead to added hair loss.
It’s also a good idea to protect your hair from the sun by using a hat. A healthy balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and raw vegetables is also a great way of promoting healthy, strong hair. Make sure you have sufficient (not too much!) Vitamin A and a good Vitamin B complex. Zinc and Copper are important trace elements to promote healthy hair growth.

- Ginkgo biloba is an herb from the Far East and has been grown in temple gardens for thousands of years. Active ingredients include flavone glycosides (including ginkgolide), bioflavins, sitosterol, lactones and anthocyanin. Ginkgo biloba has been studied for its benefits on blood with regards to circulation. - Rosmarinus officinale is an herb which originated in the Mediterranean and is regarded in folklore as a symbol of remembrance, for good reason. Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts
You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?
Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.
You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.
Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.
In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.
In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.
The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!
It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.
To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!
Unlike many so-called natural remedies manufactured according to the methods described above, at Native Remedies, we avoid standardized extracts completely and use the Full Spectrum method of extraction, which is recommended by all the authoritative Materia Medica dealing with herbal medicine.
