The urinary system
The urinary system consists of two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder, two sphincter muscles and a urethra. These organs, tubes and muscles filter out excess fluids and waste products from the bloodstream, which is then expelled as urine.
Functions of the urinary system:
- Two kidneys:
As the name suggests, kidneys are shaped like kidney beans and are located near the middle of the back, below the ribs. The kidneys remove urea, creatinin and other salts from the blood through minute filtering units called nephrons.
- Two ureters:
Urine moves from the kidneys through two narrow tubes called ureters to the bladder. The muscles in the walls of the ureter tighten and relax continuously, pushing the urine downward, away from the kidneys.
- Bladder:
The bladder is a stretchy pouch made up of muscle tissue, and is located in the lower abdomen. It is like a balloon which stores urine.
- Two sphincter muscles:
Circular muscles, called sphincters, help to regulate the flow of urine from the bladder.
- Nerves in the bladder:
When the bladder begins to fill with urine, nerves alert the brain. As the bladder reaches its limit, the urge to urinate becomes stronger.
- Urethra:
The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. The external urethral muscle allows voluntary control over urination. In males, the urethra is longer, and acts as a passageway for both urine and sperm.

- Berberis vulgaris is a widely studied herb which contains berberine as a main constituent, and is well known for its restorative effect on the bladder and urinary tract. Berberis also helps to support healthy immune system functioning.
- Cantharis (6C) is often recommended for its ability to maintain a healthy flow of urine and soothe the bladder.
- Staphysagris (6C) is a proven natural remedy also recommended for urogenital health and as a well known prostate tonic.

How do I use UTI-Free?
UTI-Free comes in convenient, dissolvable granule form. The fine granules are easy to administer to pets of all sizes and personalities and are simply sprinkled on the back of the tongue and left to dissolve.
DIRECTIONS
Cats and small dogs: Large pinch of granules sprinkled into the mouth.
Small to medium dogs: Two pinches sprinkled into the mouth.
Medium to large dogs: 1/4 cap of granules sprinkled into the mouth.
For fast support: Administer every 30 minutes for up to 6 doses a day or until the desired effect is attained. Thereafter, administer two to three times daily for at least 7 days more, or for as long as is necessary.

How long until I see results?
Individual results may vary depending on a variety of factors. However, support should be noted within a few hours and should continue to improve over the following days. A 7 – 10 day course is recommended.
A 10 - 14 day course of Immunity & Liver Support to strengthen functioning of the immune system is also highly recommended.
How long does one bottle last?

What else can I do to help my pet?
- Avoid dehydration and ensure your pet has easy access to fresh water in a regularly cleaned bowl. Filtered or bottled water is preferable to chlorinated or fluorinated water.
- Your pet needs easy access to a place where he can urinate whenever he needs to. "Holding it in" for long periods of time can lead to chronic bladder problems.
- Ensure your pet is eating a balanced, high-quality diet with plenty of raw and unprocessed food (preferably organic). Avoid dried foods as much as possible, and do not give your pet anything containing sugar.
- Avoid exposure to toxins and chemicals as much as possible including pesticides, herbicides, commercial flea collars, flea powder, insecticides and secondhand cigarette smoke.

- Talk to a holistic vet before immunizing your pet. Over-vaccination may stress the immune system unnecessarily.

Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts
You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?
Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.
You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.
Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.
In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.
In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.
The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!
It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.
To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!
Unlike many so-called natural remedies manufactured according to the methods described above, at Native Remedies, we avoid standardized extracts completely and use the Full Spectrum method of extraction, which is recommended by all the authoritative Materia Medica dealing with herbal medicine.
