Although we may not realize it, red blood cells perform the most important blood duty in our pet’s body. A single drop of blood contains millions of red blood cells that are constantly traveling through your pet’s body delivering oxygen and removing waste. If they weren't, your pet would not be able to survive.
Red blood cells are red only because they contain a protein chemical called hemoglobin that is bright red in color – this protein contains the element Iron, making it an excellent vehicle for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide.
As blood passes through the lungs, oxygen molecules attach to the hemoglobin and as the blood passes through the body's tissue, the hemoglobin releases the oxygen into every cell in your pet’s body. The empty hemoglobin molecules then bond with the tissue's carbon dioxide or other waste gases, transporting it away.
In the animal body the spleen acts as a reservoir of red blood cells, but this effect is somewhat limited. In dogs and horses, the spleen isolates large numbers of red blood cells which are dumped into the blood during times of exertion and stress, yielding a higher oxygen transport capacity.
Why is iron absorption important for your pet?
The absorption of iron is important for many reasons, some of which include:
- Oxygen transport – the red blood cell contains hemoglobin, partly made from iron, and accounts for about two-thirds of your pet’s iron supply.
- Myoglobin – a special protein that helps store oxygen in muscle tissue. Myoglobin contains iron and is responsible for the red colour of muscle, helping your pets to move, run and play.
- Enzymes – many enzymes throughout the body contain iron, including those involved in energy production. Enzymes are the catalysts that drive many of the cells’ functions.
- Immune system – proper functioning of the immune system relies, in part, on sufficient iron and oxygen. The immune system helps your pet naturally fight invading germs and organisms and stay healthy.

What is TF-Defense?
TF-Defense combines herbal and homeopathic ingredients that are known for their supportive function on red blood cells and liver health. It will also support adequate immune system functioning.
TF-Defense can be used to maintain normal levels of red blood cells as well as promote liver health and support the immune system and may therefore also be used along with conventional veterinarian treatment for tick-borne ailments.
What are the Ingredients?

- Carduus marianus (Milk Thistle) is regarded as one of the most important herbal liver tonics. Medical use of Milk Thistle may be traced back more than 2000 years. Milk Thistle contains a flavonoid complex called silymarin. Silymarin is a powerful natural anti-oxidant and can greatly support liver function and encourage toxin removal at the cellular level, thereby supporting the body’s ability to routinely regenerate liver cells.
- Crotalus hor. (C200) is a homeopathic remedy that can be used to support integrity of red blood cells while also promoting liver health and supporting the immune system.
- China (C6) is a homeopathic remedy well known for its ability to support the body in regulating energy levels naturally.
- Ferrum phos. (D6) is one of the most important biochemic tissue salts to use to discourage inflammation in the body and promote the body’s own ability to address swelling. It also supports the natural distribution of iron and oxygen throughout the body, and promotes cell walls strength.
- Aconite (C6) A homeopathic remedy that is often used to encourage calmness after sudden frights to help encourage routine balance and harmony.

How do I use TF-Defense?
TF-Defense comes in convenient dissolvable granule form. The tiny granules are easy to administer to pets of all sizes and personalities and are simply sprinkled on the back of the tongue and left to dissolve. No fuss and bother!
Cats and very small dogs:
Large pinch of granules sprinkled into the mouth.
Small to medium dogs:
Two pinches sprinkled into the mouth.
Medium to large dogs:
1/4 cap of granules sprinkled into the mouth.
Sporadic Use : Administer every hour for up to 10 doses or until the immune system is fully supported. Thereafter administer three times daily for approximately 7 - 10 days.
Long-term use: For continued, consistent support of immune system functioning.
In the case of chronic illness, we strongly recommend PetAlive Immunity and Liver Support, PetAlive Energy Tonic and PetAlive Muscle and Joint Support, depending on your pet's specific needs.
NOTE: Please consult your homeopathic or holistic vet for proper diagnosis if you suspect serious illness or other tick-borne ailments. Home treatment of these serious illnesses is not recommended.
How long until I see results?
Improvement should be noted within 5 –10 doses, although this may differ from animal to animal depending on a variety of factors.
Dosage should be continued for at least 7 days - this can be followed by supportive treatment with Immunity and Liver Support Capsules as well as other remedies like Energy Tonic or Muscle and Joint Support, depending on your pet's needs.
How long does one bottle last?
One bottle of TF-Defense will last for 15 - 30 days, depending on the size and needs of your pet.
What else can I do to help my pet?
- Prevention is better than cure. Monitor your pets carefully and regularly for ticks especially after they have been walking in potentially tick-infested areas such as long grass.
- Toxins and chemicals can have a general weakening effect on your pet's immune system so avoid exposure to them as much as possible. These include pesticides, herbicides, commercial flea collars, flea powder, insecticides and second-hand cigarette smoke. However, in high risk areas, judicious use of a tic and flea control program is advised. Please discuss this with your holistic vet
- The liver is often affected by a weakened immune system. Ask your veterinarian to explain the side effects all medications that are prescribed for your dog. If there is a chance of liver damage then find out if there is an alternative medication or if not, what you can do to minimize the effects of liver damage.
- Ensure your pet is eating a balanced, high quality diet with plenty of raw and unprocessed food (preferably organic). The liver is involved in getting rid of toxins in the body so the less chemical additives and preservatives in your pet's diet, the more his liver's workload decreases.
- Acupressure massage is helpful in improving immune functioning
- Talk to a holistic vet before immunizing your pet and research all your options as over-vaccination may stress the immune system unnecessarily.

Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts
You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?
Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.
You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.
Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.
In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.
In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.
The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!
It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.
To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!
Unlike many so-called natural remedies manufactured according to the methods described above, at Native Remedies, we avoid standardized extracts completely and use the Full Spectrum method of extraction, which is recommended by all the authoritative Materia Medica dealing with herbal medicine.
