What to expect when your puppy/kitten is teething.
Around 4 months of age your puppy or kitten will lose its first set of teeth and the adult teeth will begin to emerge from the gums. The teething process continues on and off for several months and, as with human babies, this is often a painful or uncomfortable process for your pet. You will be able to work out when your pet is teething from his increased chewing and biting on everything imaginable that is within reach.

- Chamomilla (30C) is a well-known homeopathic remedy for colic and teething. Chamomilla is useful for relieving pain and soothing puppies and kittens who are uncomfortable and irritable.
- Calc. Phos. (6C) is a biochemic tissue salt which restores strength to the body and is useful during times of growth and development. It is also excellent for improving circulation and the health of bones and teeth.
- Mag. Phos (6C) is a biochemic tissue salt that acts as a natural pain-reliever and is especially useful for teething pains and digestive discomfort like cramps, flatulence and colic.
- Passiflora incarnata is also called Passion Flower and is used as a soothing and quieting herb. This ingredient will relieve pain and calm your teething pet.
- Matricaria recutita (German Chamomile) was regarded as one of the nine sacred herbs given to the world by ancient Anglo-Saxons. In modern times it is widely used as a gentle anti-inflammatory and soothing herb.

Dietary recommendations for optimal health and immune functioning
Many holistic vets will agree that the more raw food (as opposed to cooked meals or dried commercial pet food) the animal eats, the fewer general health problems there will be. Ideally the best diet for a cat or dog is one which most closely resembles that which he would find in the wild.
For cats, who are largely carnivorous, this should consist of mainly raw meat (minced beef and chicken, chicken livers) mixed with a little bone meal and a small amount of some grated carrot or finely chopped greens like spinach.
Dogs will do well if more chopped and grated raw vegetables are added to their diets. We also recommend raw meat and raw bones for dogs, mixed with grated raw vegetables and chopped salads.
A teaspoon or two of olive oil added to the meal every day (depending on size) will also be beneficial. Do not give your animals any milk at all - nor products containing sugar. Animals who follow this type of diet are usually completely infection and allergy free.
Remember that you should not try to change your pet's diet overnight, especially if the animal is elderly. Slowly introduce new foods and allow the digestive system to become accustomed to the new diet.

Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts
You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?
Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.
You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.
Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.
In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.
In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.
The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!
It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.
To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!
Unlike many so-called natural remedies manufactured according to the methods described above, at Native Remedies, we avoid standardized extracts completely and use the Full Spectrum method of extraction, which is recommended by all the authoritative Materia Medica dealing with herbal medicine.
