What is the pancreas and what does it do?
The pancreas is a large organ (approximately six inches long) of the digestive and endocrine systems. It is located deep within the upper abdomen, surrounded by the stomach, small intestine, liver and spleen. This organ is shaped like a pear, broad at one end and narrow at the other end. It is divided in three sections – the broad end of the pancreas is called the head, the midsection is called the body, and the narrow end is called the tail.
The pancreas performs two important functions within the body.
The pancreas produces digestive juices and enzymes to help digest fats and proteins. When food has been partially digested by the stomach, it is pushed into the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). Secreting its enzymes into the duodenum helps to prevent the protein-digesting enzyme known as trypsin from eating the protein-based pancreas or its duct. Pancreatic digestive juices and enzymes are released through a small duct attached to the duodenum to mix with the food. The exocrine pancreas also produces enzymes that break down carbohydrates (amylase) and fats (lipase) as well as sodium bicarbonate, which helps to neutralize the stomach acids in food.
Another important pancreatic function is to produce the hormone insulin together with a variety of other hormones. Glucose is produced from the breaking down of starches and carbohydrates. It is absorbed through the wall of the digestive tract and passes into the bloodstream. Insulin helps to control the body’s blood sugar (glucose) levels and keep them within healthy levels. It is produced by small groups of pancreatic cells called the Islets of Langerhans, which are also known as the “islet cells”.
Insulin is secreted when your blood sugar is raised and it causes the muscles and other bodily tissues to take up glucose from the blood to fuel their activity. Insulin also promotes the absorption of glucose into the liver, where it is stored as glycogen for use in response to stress or exercise. If the islets of Langerhans produce too little insulin, this raises the level of glucose in the blood. This can then result in diabetes as well as increase the risk of a number of other problems throughout the body. It is therefore very important to support and encourage pancreatic health!
Prevention is better than cure!
Modern diets with high sugar and fat contents have affected the health of people all over the world-- and your furry friends are no exception. Find the best diet for your pet. A diet that is high in fiber and complex carbohydrates slows the digestive process and helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.
In obese animals, losing weight is also advised, and your vet may advise a prescription diet. However, if you find your pet dislikes pet food, you can prepare home-cooked food (do this in consultation with a veterinary nutritionist). Avoid commercially-prepared pet foods, which may contain high amounts of sugar and preservatives.
Exercise is another important part of keeping your pet’s blood sugar levels under control. However, be sure to keep the activity level the same from day to day. The time of day when the exercise is done, how vigorous the activity is, and how long the activity lasts all affect your pet’s blood glucose levels. If you suddenly double the amount of exercise , be warned that your pet’s blood glucose levels might drop too low, as the body needs more glucose during exercise.
How can herbal remedies and dietary supplements help?
There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that the use of carefully chosen herbal remedies and dietary supplements can help to promote pancreatic health and naturally keep pet blood sugar levels within the normal range.
Along with the correct lifestyle changes, herbal remedies and dietary supplements can make all the difference to your pet’s health.

- Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry) In the twelfth century, Abbess Hildegard of Bingen wrote of bilberry's usefulness for inducing menstruation. In recent times, several active constituents have been isolated from the berries and leaves of the bilberry plant, including anthocyanoside flavonoids (anthocyanins), vitamins and pectins, which are found in the berries, and quercetin, catechins, tannins, iridoids, and acids, which are found in the leaves. Bilberry also has excellent anti-oxidant properties due to high levels of anthocyanosides, further increasing the health benefits of this remarkable herb. Regular use of Bilberry helps to promote healthy vision and support the tiny blood capillaries which carry oxygen to the eyes. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of bilberry extract in 14 people with diabetic retinopathy or hypertensive retinopathy found significant improvements in the treated group. (Bone K. “Bilberry-The vision herb”. MediHerb Prof Rev . 1997;59:1-4).
- Chromium picolinate Chromium icolinate is a mineral supplement and highly absorbable nutritional form of chromium - an essential nutrient for sugar and fat metabolism. The adequate daily dietary intake for chromium is 50 to 200 micrograms, but most diets contain less than 60% of this intake! The FDA agrees that chromium may be of benefit in reducing the risk of insulin resistance and possibly of Type 2 diabetes. In one controlled study, subjects were administered a placebo or 100 or 500 micrograms of chromium picolinate two times per day for four months. Those subjects receiving 100 micrograms twice per day demonstrated no significant improvements, while the group receiving 500 micrograms twice per day saw highly significant improvements in the glucose/insulin system. (Anderson RA. “Nutritional factors influencing the glucose/insulin system: chromium”. J Am Coll Nutr. 1997; 16(5):404-10). (Martin J, Wang Z, Zhang X, Wachtel, D, Volautova J, Matthews D, Cefalu W. “Diabetes Care”. Volume 29;8: 2006)
- Galega officinalis (Goat’s Rue) was traditionally used in medieval Europe to help support pancreatic health and encourage healthy insulin levels and this has more recently been confirmed by clinical trials (Muller H, Reinwein H. “Pharmacology of galegin”. Arch Expll Path Pharm. 1927; 125:212-28). Studies have also suggested that this potent herb has been shown to help the body in maintaining balanced glucose in the bloodstream. (Petricic J, Kalodera Z. Galegin in the goats rue herb: its toxicity, anti-diabetic activity and content determination. Acta Pharm Jugosl. 1982; 32(3):219-23).
- Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) is one of the oldest medicinal herbs and has documented use in ancient Egyptian history and Chinese traditional medicine. Recent research in the West has highlighted the properties of this highly versatile herbal remedy. Clinical trials in India suggest that regular use of Fenugreek may help to naturally maintain blood sugar levels within the normal range. Fenugreek is also very beneficial as a digestive and kidney tonic, which in turn helps to keep the urinary tract healthy and problem-free!
- Astragalus membranaceus is also known as Huang qi in traditional Chinese medicine. More recent research has highlighted the ability of this remedy to improve the functioning of the immune system and protect against disease. Astragalus has also been shown to assist in the maintenance of healthy blood sugar levels and can help to promote natural energy and feelings of vitality due to its wonderful tonic properties.

Our Full Spectrum Approach™
Guaranteeing Quality, Effectiveness & Safety
With a wide range of natural remedies and treatments on the market today, we understand that it can sometimes be difficult to make sense of it all. We also know that since there is no standardization in the herbal industry, there is no guarantee as to the consistency, safety or potency of the herbal remedies you buy.
That is until now!
At Native Remedies, all of our remedies are developed using the Full Spectrum Approach (FSA) to ensure you get the quality, potency and protection you deserve. Our Full Spectrum Approach consists of a set of standards and processes that combine wild crafted herbs, cGMP manufacturing and a full spectrum extraction method.
Our 3 Point Promise
1. Formulation
The first step in formulating a new remedy is always determining a customer’s needs and to match them with natural ingredients that have proven effectiveness.
In doing so, we draw on a vast body of documented knowledge about traditional medicine, as well as more recent clinical research into herbal remedies and proven homeopathic ingredients. Together with a team of natural health experts, the final formulations are compiled and decided upon.
2. Raw Material Quality & Source
All of the raw ingredients we use in our remedies are purchased from reputable suppliers and our ingredients are organically grown whenever possible.
We also ensure that wild-crafted herbs are grown far away from sources of pollution and electricity pylons, and that their presence does not compromise the integrity and balance of their environment.
All of our raw ingredients are purchased with an accompanying Certificate of Analysis. On receipt, they go into quarantine until further in-house tests are completed and released by our responsible pharmacists, ensuring that the herbs are fresh and not contaminated by any impure substances (e.g. heavy metals or bacterial infections).
3. Manufacturing
We manufacture all our remedies in an FDA registered facility under sterile conditions to ensure that no contamination occurs.
All our remedies are manufactured in-house under the supervision of our expert team and none are brought in from elsewhere. This enables us to have full control over quality and safety.
All of our products are then manufactured according to the principles of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) ensuring the consistency, safety and effectiveness of our remedies.
Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts
You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?
Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.
You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.
Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.
In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.
In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.
The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!
It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.
To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!
Unlike many so-called natural remedies manufactured according to the methods described above, at Native Remedies, we avoid standardized extracts completely and use the Full Spectrum method of extraction, which is recommended by all the authoritative Materia Medica dealing with herbal medicine.
This helps us to maintain the integrity, balance and therapeutic effect of herbs with the least risk of side effects or harm to your health!
When you buy herbal and homeopathic medicines from Sage and Wisdom, you can be confident that you’re receiving a product manufactured to the highest standards of health, production and effectiveness!
