Sound support of ear health

The ears are sensitive organs - ones which would be inconvenient to live without. The ears are in charge of collecting the sounds around us, processing them and sending sound signals to the brain for interpretation. Our ears also help us to keep our balance. The ear is made up of three distinct sections: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.

The outer ear is called the pinna or auricle and is the part of the ear that extrudes from the head. The main job of the outer ear is to collect sounds, and structurally includes the ear canal, where wax is produced.

Although we tend to think of earwax as ‘gunk’ it is in fact a natural substance produced by the body to protect the ear canal. Earwax contains important chemicals that support the skin inside the ear canal and collects dirt to help keep the ear canal clean.

After sound waves enter the outer ear, they travel through the ear canal and make their way to the middle ear where sound waves turn into vibrations that are delivered to the inner ear.

To do this, the middle ear needs the eardrum - a thin piece of skin stretched tight like a drum. When sound waves reach the eardrum, they cause the eardrum to vibrate when this happens, it moves the tiny ossicles - from the hammer to the anvil and then to the stirrup - these bones help sound move along on its journey into the inner ear.

Sound comes into the inner ear as vibrations and enters the cochlea. When sound reaches the cochlea, the vibrations (sound) cause the hairs on the cells to move, creating nerve signals that the brain understands as sound.

Protect your hearing by wearing earplugs at loud music concerts and around noisy machinery. Keep the volume down on your stereo, especially if you're in the car or wearing headphones and always use a shower cap in the shower or earplugs when you swim, if you know that you are prone to getting water in your ears.

Never go poking around in your ears, even with Q-tips! Remember that the ear has a natural ability to maintain balance and health and that interference in this process can be detrimental to ear health!

Verbascum thapsus (Mullein flower) promotes and supports the natural healing of the skin when applied topically and has a long history of traditional use. Recent studies have investigated Mullein for its ability to soothe the ear. Melaleuca alternifolia (also known as Tea Tree Oil) is widely used to soothe skin and promote gentle healing. This oil is gentle enough for delicate areas of the body, such as the ears, yet still provides support for the auditory canal and inner ear.
Lavandula officinalis (Lavender) is another well-known herb that has made its home in countries all over the world, including Europe and Africa. Lavender contains the active ingredients tannins, coumarins, flavinoids, triterpenoids and volatile oil. It is best known for its calming properties and has been researched for its ability to support the immune system and promote systemic health. Allium sativum (Garlic) has been used for centuries and was popular even during the Plague of London in 1665. Garlic is an excellent tonic to support immune system functioning, promoting the body in its natural ability to assess foreign organisms. How do I use Ear-OK Drops?

Ear-OK Drops come in a convenient 30 ml glass dropper bottle.

DIRECTIONS

Short term use: Apply 1 - 3 drops directly into the ear in the morning and last thing at night. Rub ear gently to distribute oil. Continue use for approximately 5 days to give full support.

For ongoing support: Apply 1 - 3 drops into the ear twice a week.

CAUTION

For use in the ear only. Do not ingest. Discontinue if sensitivity to any of the ingredients occurs.

NOTE: Recommended for use concurrently with Ear-Heal Drops (adults and children over 10) or Eddy Ear Sprinkles (children under 10) for maximum support. Ear-Heal and Eddy Ear Sprinkles are intended for internal use to provide natural support for the immune system and systemic support of the auditory system from the inside, while Ear-OK Drops are applied directly into the ear.

How long until I see results?

Soothed and calming relief should be noted upon the first dose and will continue to give systemic support over 5 - 10 days of regular use.

How long will a bottle last?

Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts

You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?

Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.

You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.

Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.

In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.

In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.

The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!

It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.

To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!

Unlike many so-called natural remedies manufactured according to the methods described above, at Native Remedies, we avoid standardized extracts completely and use the Full Spectrum method of extraction, which is recommended by all the authoritative Materia Medica dealing with herbal medicine.
