Sound support of ear health
The ears are sensitive organs - ones which would be inconvenient to live without. The ears are in charge of collecting the sounds around us, processing them, and sending sound signals to the brain for interpretation. Our ears also help us to keep our balance. The ear is made up of three distinct sections: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.
The outer ear is called the pinna or auricle, and is the part of the ear that extrudes from the head. The main job of the outer ear is to collect sounds, and structurally includes the ear canal, where wax is produced.
Although we tend to think of earwax as ‘gunk’ it is in fact a natural substance produced by the body to protect the ear canal. Earwax contains important chemicals that support the skin inside the ear canal and collects dirt to help keep the ear canal clean. After sound waves enter the outer ear, they travel through the ear canal and make their way to the middle ear where sound waves turn into vibrations that are delivered to the inner ear.
To do this, the middle ear needs the eardrum - a thin piece of skin stretched tight like a drum. When sound waves reach the eardrum, they cause the eardrum to vibrate when this happens, it moves the tiny ossicles from the hammer to the anvil and then to the stirrup. These bones help sound move along on its journey into the inner ear.
Sound comes into the inner ear as vibrations and enters the cochlea. When sound reaches the cochlea, the vibrations (sound) cause the hairs on the cells to move, creating nerve signals that the brain understands as sound.
The natural way
Protect your hearing by wearing earplugs at loud music concerts and around noisy machinery. Keep the volume down on your stereo, especially if you're in the car or wearing headphones and always use a shower cap in the shower or earplugs when you swim, if you know that you are prone to getting water in your ears.
Never go poking around in your ears, even with Q-tips! Remember that ears have a natural balancing mechanism of their own and have been designed to be self-regulatory. Too much interference can introduce harmful organisms into the ear canal and cause problems.

What are the Ingredients?

- Pulsatilla (Pasque Flower) is a naturally gentle and soothing tonic to support ear health. Modern research has investigated this herb for its specific ability to promote ear health. (Mossinger P. “Treatment of otitis media with pulsatilla.” Kinderartzl Prax. 1985;16:581–582).
- Echinacea purpurea is the best known and researched herb for supporting the immune system. Over 500 scientific studies have been documented on this herb. One specific study investigated the immune-supportive action of this herb ( Barrett BP, Brown RL, Locken K, et al. “Treatment of the common cold with unrefined Echinacea: a randomized,double-blind, placebo-controlled trial”. Ann Intern Med 2002;Dec 17, 137(12):939-946).
- Hepar. sulph (6C) is derived from Calcium sulphide. This remedy tends to suit those who often feel chilly and are sensitive to the cold. They tend to feel better on wrapping the ears and head warmly and dislike the wind or a draft.
- Belladonna (30C) is an herb whose widespread use was initially purely cosmetic. Sixteenth century Italian women reportedly applied belladonna solutions to their eyes to dilate the pupils and achieve a dreamy and supposedly more desirable appearance (hence the name belladonna, which is Italian for 'beautiful lady')! This remedy suits those that have a tendency towards a common throbbing discomfort, often being sensitive to loud noise.
- Pulsatilla (12C) is made from the Windflower and used to support the immune system following exposure to cold temperatures or dampness.
- Levisticum radix (30C) is used to support normal moisture levels in the ear canal.
How do I use Ear-Heal?
Ear-Heal come in a convenient tincture form.
DIRECTIONS
Adults: Drink 15 drops diluted in 1/4 cup of water or juice two to three times daily.
Children over 10 yrs: Use one drop per age year of the child diluted in a little water or juice.
CAUTION
Safety during pregnancy and nursing has not yet been established.

Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts
You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?
Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.
You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.
Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.
In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.
In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.
The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!
It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.
To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!
Unlike many so-called natural remedies manufactured according to the methods described above, at Native Remedies, we avoid standardized extracts completely and use the Full Spectrum method of extraction, which is recommended by all the authoritative Materia Medica dealing with herbal medicine.
