Cradle-cap is a very common condition among infants. It usually appears on the scalp and occurs mostly between the ages of two and six months. You may have noticed thick yellow, oily or scaly patches on your little one's scalp or in some cases just dry, flaking skin.
This condition does not seem to bother babies much. When it becomes severe it may cause itching, but it generally is not painful. Left untreated, cradle-cap often clears on its own over several months, though these patches may persist or recur in some infants.
In severe cases, cradle-cap may spread to the face, armpits, and diaper area, and it is therefore a good idea to address cradle cap from a preventative point of view and also to prevent the unsightly appearance often associated with the condition - even though this may worry mothers more than their babies!
The natural way
It is inflammation of the oil-producing glands in the scalp that leads to cradle-cap, though the reason this happens is not completely clear. The most likely explanation seems to be that hormones released by the mother during the final stages of pregnancy affect the unborn baby and cause excessive stimulation of the oil-producing glands.
It is also possible that fungal overgrowth on the scalp contributes to the development of cradle-cap. Natural, safe and effective conditioning of the scalp can be achieved through herbal remedies, treating current flare-ups and helping prevent future ones.
Cradle-Cap Salve moisturizes dry and flaky skin, soothes itchy, irritated scalp, encourages natural healing of the skin, and prevents secondary bacterial or fungal infection. For best results, after use of Cradle-Cap Salve, gently rub your baby's scalp with a soft towel.
This will loosen flakes which can then be combed or brushed out with a soft brush. Don't rub too vigorously or try to remove any scaly patches that are still adherent- these will come off over the next few days and it is best not to risk further irritation and infection.
Follow by washing with a mild, baby shampoo. Once your baby's cradle-cap has cleared, frequent shampooing with a mild baby shampoo (though no more than about 2-3 times per week.) should prevent the condition coming back.

Full Spectrum Method vs. 'Standardized' Extracts
You may have heard the term 'standardized' extract used in relation to herbal remedies, but do you know what this means?
Many pharmaceutical companies have begun manufacturing herbal remedies using a process of extraction whereby harsh chemicals are employed to extract the active ingredients of medicinal herbs.
You will recognize these extracts by the usage of the words 'standardized' extract on the labels. This method of manufacturing is often cited as being more scientific and able to produce a superior product with controlled and guaranteed amounts of active ingredients in each product.
Contrary to these claims, this process is not approved by the manufacturers of holistic medicines. One of the reasons is that the process of extracting so-called 'active ingredients' and isolating them from the rest of the herb is one that has resulted in an increase in side effects, as the herb in this way loses its natural ability to protect against side effects.
In addition, many manufacturers use all parts of the plants to create standardized extracts, whereas herbalists know that only certain parts of some herbs should be used.
In the case of Ginkgo Biloba, for example, it is well known that the seeds of this plant are poisonous and can cause seizures and that only the leaves should be used. Standardized extracts of Ginkgo Biloba have been associated with the risk of seizure in some trials.
The most recent example of the dangers of using this manufacturing process includes the development of liver toxicity from using Kava Kava extract, an herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years!
It must also be added that this process of extraction requires the use of harsh chemicals and solvents, traces of which are difficult to remove completely from the final product.
To us, it makes little sense for companies to go the natural route, while being unable to guarantee that their product is free of contamination with chemicals known to be harmful to health!
